Book Description

A pioneer in the identification of receptors for neurotransmitters and drugs and in the explanation of the actions of psychotropic agents, Solomon Snyder has been instrumental in the establishment of modern psychopharmacology.Science and Psychiatry is a collection of some of his best scientific papers from the past forty years, representing important advances in psychopharmacology and molecular biology. Some offer insight into modern neuroscience to help make sense of available psychotropic medications and point the way toward more effective and safer agents; others describe the underpinnings of psychopharmacology that practitioners need to know, especially regarding the role of receptors in drug action.

The articles cover nine areas of research with particular attention to four groups of extraordinary discoveries for which Snyder is widely recognized: the identification of opiate receptors, characterization of the IP3 receptor, the establishment of nitric oxide as a transmitter in the brain, and the discovery that D-serine is the normal stimulus for the glycine site of the NMDA receptor. Each section is accompanied by a commentary by a well-known authority that puts the discoveries in perspective. Together, they attest to the rich diversity of Snyder s research while conveying the origins of modern psychopharmacologic practice.

Book Description

Cord blood is a significant source of hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells for the treatment of blood and genetic disorders. Cord blood is also an alternative to embryos as a source of tissue for regenerative medicine. Cells from cord blood have been shown to transdifferentiate into nonhematopoietic cells, including those of the brain, heart, liver, pancreas, bone, and cartilage, in tissue culture and in animal systems. Recently it has been demonstrated that both cardiac and glial cell differentiation of cord blood donor cells occurred in recipients of unrelated donor cord blood transplantation as part of a treatment regime for Krabbe disease and Sanfilippo syndrome. These observations raise the possibility that cord blood may serve as a source of cells to facilitate tissue repair and regeneration in the future. CD34 stem cell-rich umbilical cord whole blood transfusion has the potential to have an immediate benefit of better tissue oxygenation with an additional delayed benefit of possible engraftment of umbilical cord stem cells.

Book Description

Revolutionary advances in imaging technology that provide high resolution, 3-D, non-invasive imaging of biological subjects have made biomedical imaging an essential tool in clinical medicine and biomedical research. Key technological advances include MRI, positron emission tomography (PET) and multidetector X-ray CT scanners. Common to all contemporary imaging modalities is the creation of digital data and pictures. The evolution from analog to digital image data is driving the rapidly expanding field of digital image analysis. Scientists from numerous disciplines now require in-depth knowledge of these complex imaging modalities. Introduction to the Science of Medical Imaging presents scientific imaging principles, introduces the major biomedical imaging modalities, reviews the basics of human and computer image analysis and provides examples of major clinical and research applications. Written by one of the world’s most innovative and highly respected neuroradiologists, Introduction to the Science of Medical Imaging is a landmark text on image acquisition and interpretation.

Book Description

The patient s satisfaction with the outcome of esthetic treatment depends, in large measure, on the clinician s ability to understand the patient s desires and in turn to communicate effectively with the dental ceramist. Facilitation of this three-way communication is the purpose of this new clinical atlas that documents many years of collaborative work between a world-renowned clinician and educator and a master dental ceramist. This beautiful, full-color book presents patient objectives, treatment plans and outcomes, shade selection, and other elements of the smile design, ie, arrangement, brightness, character, and incisal effects, in a spare and straightforward style. For the patient, the book serves as a visual guide to various restorative treatment options and to methods for previewing the esthetic outcome of treatment; for the clinician, it is a communication guide to demonstrate the possible therapeutic approaches and to arrive at an understanding of the patient s preferences; and for the ceramist, it is a visual base for fully comprehending the desired smile composition, tooth shape, and nuances of shading. An indispensable adjunct to the practitioner s esthetic treatment armamentarium.
