Publisher: CRC Press (December 20, 2001)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 084930864X
ISBN-13: 978-0849308642.

Book Description

Completion of the first phase of the Human Genome Project has presented scientists with a mountain of new information. The availability of all human genes and their locations is exciting, but their mechanisms of action and interaction with other genes are often unknown. Certain variations in the environment and characteristics of human genes make it difficult for scientists to maximize their efforts to take advantage of this new fund of knowledge. The high degree of similarity between mouse and human genomes and physiology has made mice the laboratory animals of choice in the search for models of human disease. In recent years significant advances in our ability to examine the mouse eye and to view vascular and neural structures in vivo has led to a marked increase in interest in mouse ocular pathology and development.

Besides providing much new information, Systematic Evaluation of the Mouse Eye: Anatomy, Pathology, and Biomethods provides investigators with a resource that summarizes the widely scattered information on mouse eye anatomy, development, and pathology. It describes the normal anatomy, pre- and postnatal development, regional pathology, and methodology for evaluation of the mouse eye and adnexae. The first section covers the principal features of mouse eye anatomy and development. The second part discusses issues in evaluation of mutations in mice, including background ocular disease, control selection, quantitative traits, and ENU mutagenesis. With this background in place, the book then reviews and illustrates regional ocular pathology and correlates it with human eye disease.

Many of the contributors who have helped develop and refine the specialized techniques necessary for the examination and preparation of mouse eye tissue for microscopy provide “how-to” chapters. These chapters cover methods for necropsy, photography, histopathology, confocal microscopy, intraocular pressure measurement, and electroretinography. Systematic Evaluation of the Mouse Eye: Anatomy, Pathology, and Biomethods provides the first comprehensive and systematic guide to understanding the development, structure, and abnormal pathology of the mouse eye so you can make the most of your genetic research.

Book Description

Updated to include new material for beginners in ophthalmology and optometry, Ocular Anatomy and Physiology, Second Edition is an essential text that covers a range of fundamental information for students and clinicians.

With collaborations from Al Lens, Sheila Coyne Nemeth, and Janice K. Ledford, Ocular Anatomy and Physiology, Second Edition now begins with a jump-start chapter to overview the topic for those new to the field of eye care. Chapter two delves into embryology—a topic rarely covered—and addresses each structure of the eye, including the bony orbit, eyebrows, eye lids, lacrimal system, extraocular muscles, and the globe.

While the text continues to emphasize normal anatomy, each chapter contains a glossary of common disorders. Also included is a description of diagnostic methods for examining various tissues. The physiology of various structures and systems is explained, including the visual pathway, the inflammatory response, immunology, binocular vision, refractive errors, and accommodation. To enhance the reader’s understanding of each topic, illustrations are provided.

Book Description

This atlas gives a detailed documentation of the superior compartments of the middle ear. New microdissection approaches have been developed, most importantly anterior microdissection. In addition to the tympanic cavity, this approach allows a direct view into the anterior membrane of Prussak’s space, the anterior surface of the tensor fold, and the supratubal recess, areas not explored earlier. The regular and hitherto unknown auxiliary aeration and drainage pathways are shown in detail. Aeration of Prussak’s space is documented using both microdissection and serial sections; these pathways from the mesotympanum or from the lower lateral attic are independent of the tympanic isthmus. The pathology caused by chronic inflammation on the aeration and drainage routes is also documented, and new surgical microdissection methods for removal of the tensor fold are described.

This revision aid is of great practical benefit to all radiology trainees studying for their professional examinations. The carefully structured questions and answers enable trainees to undertake a systematic assessment of their knowledge; they also highlight areas where additional study is required. It is developed to complement its highly illustrated parent text, Applied Radiological Anatomy (Cambridge, 1999); but both books can be used together or independently of one another. The questions posed within are relevant and useful for radiology trainees worldwide.
