Book Description

The Oxford Handbook of Genetics provides an essential overview of this complex subject, distilled into an accessible format for primary care practitioners and junior doctors. It can be used as an aide memoire to gain advice with individual patients during the working day, or as a reference text to be read over time. Combining the expertise of leading geneticists with the knowledge of experienced general practitioners, the handbook covers the genetics core curriculum as defined by the Royal College of General Practitioners. It includes sections on elementary genetics, single gene disorders, and chromosomal problems, as well as information about the multifactorial diseases, such as ischaemic heart disease, with which practitioners are more familiar. There are also comprehensive sections on antenatal issues and cancers. A comprehensive glossary with explanations of genetic terminology and an extensive list of resources make this book suitable for all healthcare professionals regardless of their level of knowledge or experience. Designed to cross the primary-secondary care interface, this unique handbook covers the gap between general health training and genetic specialist training, including specific advice about when and how to make a referral to a genetics service. Given the rapid growth in the genetic knowledge base, this book is designed to be both accessible and informative as a substantive educational resource for practitioners.

ISBN-13: 978-1441924339.

Book Description

Tropical crop plants are one of the natural world’s most valuable assets. However, the genetic resources of tropical plants are underutilized and in danger of being lost due to the destruction of natural habitats, the high costs of conservation programs, and our lack of appreciation of the worth of these precious resources. Considering the tropical origin of much of the biological diversity that is responsible for genes and phenotypes of temperate crops, there is a critical need for assessing the genomics of tropical plant species. Genomics of Tropical Crop Plants summarizes recent progress on genomic research, including the development of molecular markers, genomic and cDNA libraries, expressed sequence tags (ESTs), genetic and physical maps, gene expression profiles, and whole genome sequences for 20 tropical crop plants. It offers background information about the evolutionary origin and environments of tropical crop species, international programs that are addressing the needs of tropical agriculture, and the potential for new technologies to increase the productivity and value of tropical crops. This book provides new dimensions to growing information concerning temperate crops and their morphology, physiology, and parallel evolution in diverse plant lineages. This book will appeal to graduate students, post graduates, researchers, and professionals in plant breeding, genetics, germplasm conservation, and agronomy of tropical crop plants. About the Editors: Paul H. Moore is a world authority on tropical plants with a particular focus on sugarcane, papaya, and pineapple. In his almost 40-year career, he has published over 150 papers in highly reputable scientific journals and is considered the foremost expert in sugarcane. He along with Dr. Ming are co-Editors-in-Chief of the new Springer journal, Tropical Plant Biology. Dr. Ray Ming is an associate professor of plant biology at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Illinois and has done extensive research on papaya, coffee, pineapple, and sugarcane. His expertise includes work on evolution of sex chromosomes in plants, and the structure and organization of the papaya genome.

Book Description

This book introduces concepts from the field of behavior genetics at a level readily comprehended by upper-division undergraduates, or graduate students from a variety of disciplines including Psychology, Biology, Chemistry, Anthropology and Sociology. The text begins with a brief introduction to the field of behavior genetics, including some historical insight. Subsequent chapters build a basic understanding of genetics, beginning with the molecular structure of DNA and how it is organized into genes that then direct protein structure and function. Readers are then guided into an explanation of how genes may directly influence the neurons from which behaviors originate. One chapter is dedicated to describing methods used in the discovery process of basic genetic research. Having established an understanding of how genes influence neural processes responsible for behavior, concepts of hereditary patterns are then introduced. Two chapters are dedicated to heredity research spanning basic Mendelian patterns to more complex concepts of multiple-gene inheritance. A third chapter describes the influence of environmental factors on inheritance patterns, with an additional chapter dedicated to describing methodological approaches to studying hereditary patterns. With a solid foundation established for understanding genetics and heredity, a sequence of five chapters applies earlier concepts to both normal and abnormal behaviors associated with cognition, mood, and sexual behaviors. Health issues including cardiovascular stress disorders, eating disorders, and addictions are also discussed. The book concludes with two chapters on practical application of behavior genetics, including insight into careers and the future of this rapidly expanding field.

Book Description

Genetics Primer for Exercise Science and Health is the first text dedicated to the basic concepts of genetics in relation to the broad range of topics in exercise science and health. Author Stephen M. Roth, PhD, makes the content comprehensible for readers who are unfamiliar with genetics without sacrificing the foundational and critical understanding necessary for interpreting research findings and incorporating genetics into research programs.

Genetics Primer for Exercise Science and Health maintains a practical focus and addresses common concerns when preparing to study genetics, such as how to use online search tools to identify existing research literature and how to identify and select candidate genes using genome databases. Through this text, readers will discover these concepts:

-The basics of DNA and genetics as they relate to health, physical activity, and sport

-Specific skills and strategies for interpreting and applying genetics findings in research

-How genetics research may affect sport performance training and clinical practice

-The ethical issues raised by genetics in society and sport

Special focus sections are incorporated throughout the text, providing expanded discussions of interesting topics in each chapter. Students see examples of how the principles described in the book have played out in real-life research, and they receive explicit instructions on planning and interpreting genetics research. Pedagogical aids such as summaries, key terms, and review questions also make this text ideal for efficient learning.
