Book Description

The provocative title stems from the recent International Blood Transfusion Symposium in Groningen, The Netherlands held under the auspicies of the World Health Organization (WHO), International Society of Blood Transfusion (ISBT) and Council of Europe (CoE). Transfusion medicine is a new discipline which has a wide remit. As defined recently, transfusion medicine deals with that part of the healthcare system which undertakes appropriate provision and use of human blood resources; transfusion practice is therefore a collective activity linking the blood donor with the patient. Transfusion medicine occupies areas in which it is deemed to be important or even essential that medical practitioners contribute to this bridging process. The broad issues and complex practices are presented in the masterly Introduction by the WHO’s Assistant Director General with emphasis on education and multidisciplinary facets involving transfusion medicine. The challenging subjects are dealt in great details with a wealth of personal experience by 24 experts from the U.K., France, The Netherlands, U.S.A., Australia, Germany, Sweden, WHO and the Council of Europe. This is a comprehensive yet concise state of the art presentation involving donor and delivery system, ethics and legal elements, effects of modern techniques, importance of management and the future directions in this new economic environment. The book has been divided into four sections which discuss both the facts and the fiction.

Book Description

While the enzyme cascade that allows coagulation is well known physiologically, its elegant practical examples are vividly demonstrable in the clinical application of blood and components for the treatment of bleeding problems in surgery, trauma or in congenital deficiency in patients. This volume provides the fundamental and recent understanding relating to coagulation pathways, recombinant technology and other methods for coagulation factor production, up to date laboratory assay, preservation of cellular and plasma components, and their clinical use in surgery and medicine, including the immuno response to repeated challenge to contaminating protein in coagulation factor concentrates. The interrelated but multi-disciplinary chapters have been integrated in four sections: Principles and Fundamentals: Mechanism of thrombin formation, structure-function relationship of coagulation proteins, role of calcium and anticoagulant, blood collection on haemostatic potential of plasma proteins and platelets; Factor VIII yields from anticoagulant exchanged plasma; Preservation Aspects: Platelet function preservation, platelet interaction with vessel wall, trends in the use of coagulation factor concentrate, immuno purification of Factor VIII, and structural and fundamental properties of recombinant coagulation factors; Laboratory Aspects: Platelets counting and function testing, platelet crossmatch predictive value, clinical efficacy of platelet concentrate, protein C and protein S, principle of coagulation factor assay, standardisation of clotting factor assays, and clinical efficacy of clotting factor concentrates.

Book Description

Since 1971, the number of cancer survivors in the United States has tripled, and is growing by 2% each year. As of 2005, there were 10.7 million cancer survivors, who now comprise 3.5% of the U.S. population. The burgeoning numbers reflect improvements throughout the cancer continuum, including early detection, supportive care, and therapeutic approaches. This special issue of Hematology and Oncology Clinics of North America builds on the considerable momentum that cancer survivorship has gained over the last twenty years. Included herein are current statistics on U.S. cancer survivors; new paradigms in the follow-up care of cancer survivors; and specific recommendations for the follow-up of survivors of childhood cancer, testicular cancer, and Hodgkin lymphoma. This issue also describes selected sequelae of cancer treatment, including second primary cancers, cardio-pulmonary toxicity, and infertility. A separate manuscript is devoted to the evolving field of the molecular genetics of cancer survivorship. Other articles discuss the promotion of healthy lifestyles among cancer survivors, the application of integrative and complementary therapies, and the existence of advocacy organizations and support systems.

Book Description

This issue of Hematology Oncology Clinics of North America is dedicated to the topic of Antiphospholipid Syndromes. The antiphospholipid syndromes are the most common of the acquired thrombophilias, yet remain unclear and confusing to most clinicians and physicians in general. These disorders commonly lead to arterial and venous thrombosis and other serious clinical sequealae, but many physicians forget to consider testing for antiphospholipid syndrome when faced with these events. Indeed many do not recognize the different antiphospholipid antibodies that may lead to thrombotic and thromboembolic events and other catastrophic events in a wide variety of medical and surgical settings. Thus this issue is written by experts in these various specialties wherein antiphospholipid syndromes are most commonly seen. In addition sections are dedicated to laboratory diagnostic features and tests available, pathophysiology and controversies.

This issue contains a comprehensive review of the most relevant information about targeted therapies, including preclinical studies as well as clinical trials that are ongoing. Attention is given to the main Tirosine Kinase inhibitors, such as anti-EGFR and multitargeted therapies. The newly developed therapies against intracellular pathways responsible for the tumor phenotype (mTOR inhibitors, farnesyltransferase inhibitors, and heat sock protein inhibitors) are also presented. This information is important because these new drugs are being tested in the clinical setting.

introduction to blood components and blood plasma proteins

blood plasma protein domains, motifs and repeats

blood plasma protein families and posttranslational modifications

blood coagulation and fibrinolysis

the complement system

the immune system

enzymes

cytokines and growth factors

transport and storage

The information of each protein discussed in this book in some detail is summarised at the end of each chapter in a Data Sheet, where one can find the most important data of each protein at one glance. Full cross-referencing to protein databases is given and many of the proteins discussed are accompanied by their 3D structure.
