Special attention is paid to such topics as the diagnosis of hospital-acquired pneumonia caused by p. aeruginosa, scheduled antibiotic therapy for patients with cystic fibrosis, empiric therapy for febrile neurotropenic patients, combination vs. single agent antibiotic therapy for severely ill patients, and alternatives to conventional antibiotic therapies.

This excellent overview of our current understanding of pseudomonas aeruginosa pathogenesis will prove useful to clinicians and microbiologists around the globe.

Book Description

The efficiency and speed of modern travel has exposed increasing numbers of people to a wide variety of infections which may not be well known to most ‘western’ physicians. These may enter temperate countries in their immigrant hosts and often only become clinically manifest after their arrival in their newly adopted country, where they may need to be diagnosed rapidly. This book provides a coverage of tropical disease due to parasites including protozoa, nematodes, trematodes, cestodes, acanthocephala and arthropods, as well as bacteria, rickettsia and viruses. It discusses the epidemiological and clinical aspects of each disease in detail and illustrates the biology and life cycle of the causatory organism, as well as the pathology associated with infection and details of the treatment and long term management of the disease. The aim of the book is to provide a broad readership with a comprehensive, highly illustrated overview of the diseases covered and a practical guide to their diagnosis and treatment.

The field of medical mycology has witnessed major advances in recent years. This issue brings physicians up to date in the current methods of diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of medically important fungal infections. Leading authorities in the field address the most important emerging fungi that physicians are encountering more and more today. Other fungi covered include aspergillosis, invasive candidiasis, zygomycosis, cryptococcosis, coccidioidomycosis, and phaeohyphomycosis. Endemic mycoses such as histoplasmosis, blastomycosis, sporotrichosis, and penicilliosis are also addressed. Pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of antifungals are addressed, as well as antifungal susceptibility testing, and non-culture based diagnostics for opportunistic fungi. Attention is also given to how best to deal with mycoses in children.

Book Description

Infection is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with neoplastic disease because of compromised host defenses. These defects result in an increased risk of infection and its complications. The nature of the underlying malignancy, the immunodeficiencies associated with it, and the treatments directed against it are all important determinants of infection. In recent years, the introduction of more intensive chemotherapeutic regimes and the widespread use of bone marrow and peripheral stem cell transplantation have changed the pattern of infection in many patients. Furthermore, the increasing use of central venous access devices and antimicrobial prophylaxis has changed the epidemiology of infection in these patients as well. The goal of this volume in the Cancer Treatment and Research series is to emphasize that while the management of infection in cancer patients is common, it is constantly changing. With the increasing complexity of these patients, optimal management requires a multidisciplinary approach. Ultimately, it is hoped that this book will assist clinicians in the diagnosis, management, and prevention of infection in order to optimize care for patients with cancer.

Book Description

Infections remain the leading cause of death worldwide and as new antibiotics are developed organisms develop mechanisms of resistance. Successful treatment of skin infections relies on accurate and swift diagnosis and visual inspection remains the most important means to that end. This book aims to provide a pictorial guide to the diagnosis of common bacterial, fungal, and viral skin infections, as well as recognition of arthropods of medical importance. The text is divided into chapters by class of organism, and in each chapter by clinical entity. It will be of lasting value to dermatologists in practice and training, and to general physicians/practitioners interested in dermatology.

Book Description

The revolution in psychiatry that began in earnest in the 1960s led to dramatic advances in the understanding and treatment of manic-depressive illness. Hailed as the most outstanding book in the biomedical sciences when it was originally published in 1990, Manic-Depressive Illness was the first to survey this massive body of evidence comprehensively and to assess its meaning for both clinician and scientist. It also vividly portrayed the experience of manic-depressive illness from the perspective of patients, their doctors, and researchers. Encompassing an understanding about the illness as Kraeplin conceived of it- about its cyclical course and about the essential unity of its bipolar and recurrent unipolar forms- the book has become the definitive work on the topic, revered by both specialists and nonspecialists alike.

Now, in this magnificent second edition, Drs. Frederick Goodwin and Kay Redfield Jamison bring their unique contribution to mental health science into the 21st century. In collaboration with a team of other leading scientists, a collaboration designed to preserve the unified voice of the two authors, they exhaustively review the biological and genetic literature that has dominated the field in recent years and incorporate cutting-edge research conducted since publication of the first edition. They also update their surveys of psychological and epidemiological evidence, as well as that pertaining to diagnostic issues, course, and outcome, and they offer practical guidelines for differential diagnosis and clinical management. The medical treatment of manic and depressive episodes is described, strategies for preventing future episodes are given in detail, and psychotherapeutic issues common in this illness are considered. Special emphasis is given to fostering compliance with medication regimens and treating patients who abuse drugs and alcohol or who pose a risk of suicide. This book, unique in the way that it retains the distinct perspective of its authors while assuring the maximum in-depth coverage of a vastly expanded base of scientific knowledge, will be a valuable and necessary addition to the libraries of psychiatrists and other physicians, psychologists, clinical social workers, neuroscientists, pharmacologists, and the patients and families who live with manic-depressive illness.
