Book Description

This reference work describes the routes by which disease causing microorganisms are transmitted and how disease transmission is prevented by disinfection and control of microbial growth. The first part of this book addresses the processes of infectious disease transmission and prevention. The second section specifically deals with the prevention of infectious diseases that are transmitted by water or food. The third part considers disease transmission by aerosols, environmental surfaces and medical devices. The final four chapters describe some essential mechanisms of disinfection. Throughout this volume, experts demonstrate how our ability to model the processes of disease transmission and disinfection helps us understand them.

Book Description

In recent years much enthusiasm and energy has been directed toward the development of human gene therapies, especially for inherited conditions and cancers. However, current gene transfer technology is limited in its transduction efficiency and ability to permanently and safely correct genomic defects. Thus the promise of gene therapy for these conditions is as yet unrealized. The progression of gene transfer technology will eventually surmount these limitations.

Gene Therapy for Acute and Acquired Diseases includes selected examples of ongoing studies in molecular genetics that have the potential to evolve into human therapies for acute illnesses. These chapters are intended to highlight lesser known applications of gene therapy for acquired disorders. It is expected that human gene therapy trials for these conditions will be forthcoming in the near future, leading to previously unimaginable therapies. Thus, this first-ever book about gene therapy for acute and acquired diseases is intended to serve as a glimpse into the future.

Book Description

Antiviral Drug Discovery gives readers a cutting-edge view of how chemical concepts are being mobilized to develop novel approaches that will effectively confront emerging diseases and biowarfare. Among the many topics discussed are smallpox, the Ebola virus, influenza, SARS, arenaviruses and flaviviruses. Each chapter discusses hypothetical strategies for the discovery of relevant antiviral agents, recent findings related to biochemistry or drug discovery, and advances in the further development of established leads in the area. Timely and informative, this book clearly delineates the efforts being made to develop new and effective broad-spectrum antiviral agents.

Book Description

Dengue virus is a member of the Flaviviridae family, which includes viruses associated with human diseases such as yellow fever, Japanese encephalitis and hepatitis C. Dengue fever is transmitted by mosquitoes, principally Aedes aegypti. There are four serotypes of dengue virus, of which DENV-2 has been the most prevalent in many recent epidemics. Following primary infection, lifelong immunity develops, preventing repeated assault by the same serotype. However, the non-neutralizing antibodies from a previous infection or maternally acquired antibodies are thought to form complexes with a different serotype during a subsequent infection and cause dengue haemorrhagic fever/dengue shock syndrome, which can be fatal. There is no treatment or vaccine available today that can combat this emerging and uncontrolled disease.

This book features contributions from the world’s leading researchers working on dengue and related flaviviruses who examine the current state of the art in the molecular biology of the dengue virus. Particular emphasis is placed on the structure and function of the virus and the targeting of virus proteins by potential antiviral agents. The pathogenesis of dengue and dengue haemorrhagic fever are discussed in detail, especially the target cells and the specific receptors on these cells, thereby developing a clear overview of host and viral factors that contribute to dengue haemorrhagic fever. Finally, the book reviews the therapeutic options, paying particular attention to ways in which vector, host and environment can play a critical role in the spread of this disease.

With dengue fever and other emerging viral diseases becoming increasingly prevalent around the world, this book provides valuable insight into the virus that causes this disease and potential ways to manage it. It is essential reading for all those working in tropical diseases, public health and virology.

This second edition of The Physician’s Guide provides paediatricians and other physicians with a unique aid to help them select the correct diagnosis from a bewildering array of complex clinical and laboratory data. Delay and mistakes in the diagnosis of inherited metabolic diseases may have devastating consequences. The guide, which includes a CD-ROM, describes 298 disorders which have been grouped into 35 chapters according to the type of condition. Within each group of disorders, chapters provide tables of pertinent clinical findings as well as reference and pathological values for crucial metabolites. Relevant metabolic pathways and diagnostic flow charts are included. There are three indices to make the book as user-friendly as possible.
