Book Description

The improved survival of very preterm and very low birth weight infants in recent decades has been associated with an increase in the prevalence of physical and neurodevelopmental problems. Attention is increasingly being focused on the quality of life of survivors, who are at greater risk of brain damage and consequent neurological disorders, and neuropsychological and behavioural impairments. In this volume, leading experts present a comprehensive and up-to-date perspective on research in various aspects of the long-term consequences of very preterm birth. As well as extending existing knowledge of the neurodevelopmental sequelae following very preterm birth, a shared aim of this burgeoning body of research is to identify the mechanisms underlying variations in outcome, and thus recognise subgroups of children who are at increased risk of neurodevelopmental problems, for whom appropriate intervention strategies can be devised. Pediatricians, neurologists, psychiatrists and psychologists will all find this to be essential reading.

Book Description

Neuronavigation enables the surgeon to define each cranial and cerebral structure before and during surgery but the problem of brainshifting remains. This atlas shows drawings of anatomical landmarks for neuronavigation for preoperative planning. The authors show the relationships between bony landmarks which are unchanged during the operation and landmarks which are no more available after opening of the skull but still recognizable during the operation, e.g. by ultrasonic sector scan. It further includes the description of many important anatomical variants, which are important for microsurgeons when using minimal invasive modern techniques (endoscopy, sterotaxy) to avoid errors and complications. The book describes unknown projections for MRI and CT which may be adapted for special surgical problems.

The anatomical drawings are the result of a twenty-five-years study of the topographical anatomy of the brain and the surrounding structures combined with the experience of modern microsurgery.

Book Description

This volume highlights current state-of-the-art approaches and important findings on the behavioral neurobiology of drug addiction by prominent neuroscientists. Preclinical chapters span synaptic neuroplasticity associated with drug use, the neural systems underlying conditioned drug effects implicated in drug craving, and the role of sensitization and withdrawal processes in addictive behavior. Chapters on human studies emphasize neuroimaging of neurotransmitters and receptors, drug craving and other cognitive abnormalities in human drug abusers. Human studies also describe work on genetic vulnerability and the neuroeconomics of drug addiction, and novel pharmacological approaches to drug abuse treatment.

Book Description

Electrical neuroimaging is based on the analysis of brain electrical activity recorded from the human scalp with multichannel EEG. It offers enormous potential for the dynamic mapping of brain functions, and for the non-invasive diagnosis of neurological and psychiatric conditions. This authoritative reference gives a systematic overview of new electrical imaging methods, with a sound introduction to the basics of multichannel recording of EEG and event-related potential (ERP) data, as well as spatio-temporal analysis of the potential fields. The book enables researchers to measure valid data, select and apply appropriate analysis strategies, and avoid the most common mistakes when analyzing and interpreting EEG/ERP data. Importantly, it informs the research communities of the possibilities opened by these space-domain oriented approaches to the analysis of brain electrical activity, and of their potential to offer even more powerful diagnostic techniques when integrated with other clinically relevant data.
