Targeted therapy is one of the most burgeoning areas of development in cancer research. Increasing knowledge in tumor formation and growth at the molecular level has generated a broad array of therapeutic options, including signal transduction inhibition, anti-angiogenic and anti-vascular agents, cell cycle inhibitors, telomerase and telomere interacting agents, apoptosis inducers, and anti-invasive agents. This book presents an authoritative overview of existing molecular targeted therapies, their relevance and role for specific tumors, and their clinical efficacy and impact on patient treatment.

ISBN-10: 9781402051081
ISBN-13: 978-1402051081.

Book Description

Cancers of the digestive tract account for a large portion of all malignancies and colorectal cancer (CRC), the most common digestive tract cancer, is the second leading cause of cancer death in the Western world. Although a number of advances have been made in understanding the pathogenesis of the diseases and in developing new treatments, in particular for CRC patients, the mortality of GI cancers is still considerably high. Recent trends in medical and surgical oncology, gastroenterology and molecular pathology are of considerable interest in dealing with this problem. New models for the carcinogenesis of oesophageal cancer have been developed, potentially leading to new chemopreventive strategies for the disease. Helicobacter pylori has been identified as the leading cause of gastric lymphomatous as well as epithelial malignancies, alternative molecular pathways of colon cancer development have been identified and above all novel treatments have been found which target specific molecular alterations of malignant cells and thus significantly improve overall survival of GI cancer patients.

This book, the proceedings of the Falk Symposium No. 149 on ‘Highlights in Gastrointestinal Oncology’, held in Berlin, Germany, on 1–2 October 2005, provides a comprehensive overview of the recent advances in GI oncology. The outstanding contributions of world-leading experts in the various fields achieves an up-to-date analysis of the scientific data and also provides immediate applications for day-to-day clinical work. It is hoped that through a better understanding of the molecular alterations which lead to GI cancers, partly through using sophisticated new laboratory techniques, we will be able to identify novel targets for prevention and treatment of the diseases. Among the various highlights of the book are chapters on animal models for GI cancers, on statistical models to compute polyp recurrence after polypectomies, and concepts for improving public awareness for GI cancers as well as basic science concepts about to enter clinical use.

Book Description

Compiling the latest developments in anticancer therapies based on the connection between tumor and capillary growth, Tumor Angiogenesis and Microcirculation presents a comprehensive overview of diverse aspects of angiogenesis-related cancer research. Highlights the role angiogenesis and its inhibitors play in the growth, metastasis, and dormancy of tumors! Facilitating the progress of clinical practice with insights from methodological and scientific results, Tumor Angiogenesis and Microcirculation ·	summarizes biological principles of angiogenesis and microcirculation, from endothelial cells and pericytes, and extracellular matrix regulation to matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and plasmin and plasmin inhibitors ·	examines proangiogenic factors such as vascular endothelial (VEGF) and basic fibroblast (bFGF) growth factors, tie receptors, and cytokines ·	outlines methods for discovering angiogenesis stimulators and inhibitor peptides, particularly the clinical development of thrombospondin, angiostatin, endostatin, and MMP inhibitors ·	reveals the link between oncogenes and neoplastic angiogenesis and its regulation by the organ microenvironment · investigates tumor vascularity in relation to tumor growth and the spread of cancer ·	details promising future applications, including perspectives in vascular cancer therapy ·	and more! Combining the resources of 60 recognized experts and nearly 3000 pertinent literature references, drawings, photographs, and x-rays, Tumor Angiogenesis and Microcirculation profits oncologists, pathologists, hematologists, and radiation and hemato-oncologists; surgeons and internists; cardiologists; immunologists; cell, molecular, and developmental biologists; rheumatologists; ophthalmologists; dermatologists; and medical school students in these disciplines.

Book Description

Palliative Care Consultations in Haemoto-oncology is the first book in a new international, multi-contributed series aimed at providing practical, clinical guidance on how to deal with difficult symptoms related to specific cancer sites. Patients with hematological malignancy often undergo the most rigorous treatments, usually requiring long inpatient stays at tertiary referral centres far removed from friends, families and everyday life. The treatment for some malignancies is palliative, although aggressive, from diagnosis and there can be a number of difficult symptom control problems all of which are covered in this book. This volume draws on the expertise of the hematologist who is vital if the patient is to have optima care and provides practical advice in an easily accessible form so that the book can be read and referred to on the ward, or before a domiciliary visit.

Book Description

The clinical cases collected in this book have all been previously published in the Clinical Case series in the journal ANNALS of ONCOLOGY, from April 1993 to April 1996. They are intended as an educational series, aiming to discuss aspects of current cancer management, to highlight good practice and areas of controversy and to indicate where knowledge is lacking and where new ideas are leading. As many positive comments were received on the series, the clinical cases deserve a separate publication. The cases are grouped by organ system.
