Book Description

Palliative Care Consultations in Haemoto-oncology is the first book in a new international, multi-contributed series aimed at providing practical, clinical guidance on how to deal with difficult symptoms related to specific cancer sites. Patients with hematological malignancy often undergo the most rigorous treatments, usually requiring long inpatient stays at tertiary referral centres far removed from friends, families and everyday life. The treatment for some malignancies is palliative, although aggressive, from diagnosis and there can be a number of difficult symptom control problems all of which are covered in this book. This volume draws on the expertise of the hematologist who is vital if the patient is to have optima care and provides practical advice in an easily accessible form so that the book can be read and referred to on the ward, or before a domiciliary visit.

Book Description

Patients with degenerative neurological disorders are among the most handicapped patients in medicine. Many of these diseases are incurable. Expert palliative care is the duty of every neurologist: however, to date, this has not been a standard feature of neurological practice or training. This book helps define a new field, namely palliative care in neurology. It brings together all necessary information for neurologists caring for a patient with advance disease. Palliative care is an approach to the management of patients with life-threatening illness that attempts to enhance comfort, relieve psychosocial and spiritual distress, assure respect for decision making, provide support for the family, and prepare the patient and family for the end of life. This unique book covers each of the many dimensions of palliative care as they relate to patients with advanced neurological disorders. Basic principles of palliative care and specific ethical issues (such as euthanasia, food and hydration and advance directives) are covered. The needs of populations with specific neurological disorders are described and the management of symptoms that are common to all is explored in detail. Each chapter introduces its topic using a case report which may be used directly for teaching purposes. The authors have put together an invaluable resource, which lays the foundation for further research in the field.

Book Description

Palliative care affirms the value of holistic support for persons facing death from advanced disease. This handbook aims to provide succinct and practical advice on the management of major neurological disorders in both their supportive and terminal phases, recognizing that these conditions are increasing in prevalence in virtually every society as the proportion of elderly persons grows. It demonstrates how the discomforts encountered in dementia, stroke, Parkinson’s disease, ALS, Huntington’s disease, muscular dystrophies and multiple sclerosis can benefit from the same comprehensive approach to palliation as has evolved in specialist care for cancer.

Book Description

Today we have more control over how we live and how we die than we ever had before. This fact has produced many ethical problems. While much about life is biologically determined, much else is determined by the social circumstances surrounding it. Unfortunately, little energy is spent dealing with the social and psychological factors within which the medical/biological factors are imbedded. In this volume the authors examine some of the medical social and psychological conditions which affect the way we die. Important topics covered include attitudes toward death; suicide, assisted suicide and euthanasia; hospice and pain management. This volume will be of interest to all who work with terminally ill patients.

Book Description

This book outlines the protocols and practical applications of the mutual medicine approach for non-specialists working with terminally ill patients. This book is the result of a government-funded study to analyse the relationship between the general practitioner and patient with terminal illness. “Mutual Care in Palliative Medicine” develops and defines a beneficial approach for the patient and one which is workable for the general practitioner. “Mutual Care in Palliative Medicine” looks at adopting the mutual medicine approach particularly for general practitioners, who often have an established relationship with the patient and are involved in patient management with specialists and a palliative care team. “Mutual Care in Palliative Medicine” is the first publication to outline the mutual medicine approach in the non-specialist arena. The concept behind the mutual medicine approach focuses on the interpersonal doctor-patient dynamics where there is a mutual exchange of care between the doctor and patient, in contrast to the conventional approach to doctor-patient relationships where care is provided by the doctor to the patient. The book uses case studies and data to explain the basic theory behind the concept, taking a step-by-step approach to defining the roles and protocols of the practitioner. The book is practical and comprehensive.

Book Description

Palliative care is now not just about the end stage of diseases like cancer and motor-neurone disease, but includes all illnesses that are currently non-curable and life -limiting. Because of these changes in the specialty a whole range of new ethical issues have occurred and will continue to do so. This book brings together the knowledge and experience of a diverse team of professionals. The second edition has been completely revised and updated by the original authors and also contains fresh contributions from new authors. It gives the reader a thorough grounding on ethical issues in palliative care, whilst acting as a springboard for further discussion, research and contemplation. Theoretical discussion leads on to practical components and a section on teaching palliative care. Ethical Issues in Palliative Care is a vital reference for all medical and healthcare professionals who care for dying patients and especially those who work in palliative care. It is also useful for students, those involved in spiritual or pastoral care, members of ethics committees and policy makers and shapers.
