Book Description

Designed for undergraduate and graduate nursing students, this text presents the basic principles of statistics as applied in medical practice. Covers all essential topics, with worked examples and exercises drawn from nursing and research. Each chapter contains an overview, objectives, examples, exercises and summary of critical concepts. Revised and expanded to include new information on level of measurement and its role in selecting a statistical analysis, calculating standardized scores and their associated probabilities using the normal curve and statistical decisions and their outcomes. Also features new chapters on estimating population parameters and on a decision tree approach for selecting a statistical analysis. This book should be of interest to nurses.

Book Description

Early detection, or screening, is a common strategy for controlling chronic disease, but little information has been available to help determine which screening procedures are worthwhile, and how often, or to whom, they should be applied. This book presents the epidemiological methods that can be used to answer such questions. The book focuses on the description and measurement of changes in the natural history of disease brought about by early detection and treatment. Valid methods for assessing the usefulness of screening in reducing morbidity and mortality are emphasized and both experimental and nonexperimental studies are fully described. In addition, this work discusses the use of mathematical models in setting screening policy; ways to enhance the feasibility of screening programs; and the clinical course of screen-detected disease, separating the effects of early treatment, lead time, and length bias on outcome. The second edition has been updated throughout and considerably expanded. There are three new chapters: Cancer of the Breast; Arteriosclerotic Vascular Disease; and Cancer of the Cervix. These give concrete demonstrations of the applications of screening methods to important diseases.

Book Description

This is a practical introduction to multilevel analysis suitable for all those doing research. Most books on multilevel analysis are written by statisticians; those books are difficult for non-mathematical researchers. In contrast, this volume provides an accessible account on the practical application of multilevel analysis in research. Many worked examples, with computer output, are given to illustrate and explain this subject. Datasets of the examples are available on the internet, so the reader can reanalyze the data. This approach will help bridge the conceptual and communication gap that exists between researchers and statisticians.

Book Description

Analytic procedures suitable for the study of human disease are scattered throughout the statistical and epidemiologic literature. Explanations of their properties are frequently presented in mathematical and theoretical language. This well-established text gives readers a clear understanding of the statistical methods that are widely used in epidemiologic research without depending on advanced mathematical or statistical theory. By applying these methods to actual data, Selvin reveals the strengths and weaknesses of each analytic approach. He combines techniques from the fields of statistics, biostatistics, demography and epidemiology to present a comprehensive overview that does not require computational details of the statistical techniques described. For the Third Edition, Selvin took out some old material (e.g. the section on rarely used cross-over designs) and added new material (e.g. sections on frequently used contingency table analysis). Throughout the text he enriched existing discussions with new elements, including the analysis of multi-level categorical data and simple, intuitive arguments that exponential survival times cause the hazard function to be constant. He added a dozen new applied examples to illustrate such topics as the pitfalls of proportional mortality data, the analysis of matched pair categorical data, and the age-adjustment of mortality rates based on statistical models. The most important new feature is a chapter on Poisson regression analysis. This essential statistical tool permits the multivariable analysis of rates, probabilities and counts.

Book Description

There is a vast need for statistical analysis and applications in health care administration. Statistics are a key element of many health administration courses, including financial management, and quantitative methods, but texts in this area typically presume quantitative skills that students and many professionals so often lack. This text fills the needs of both students and practicing health care managers who must apply statistical concepts and methods to real world health care management problems and issues. Fundamentals of Statistics in Health Administration covers essential fundamentals in a user-friendly way with a strong emphasis on practical application of statistics in health administration. The text is highly structured with step by step instructions throughout. There is an emphasis on Excel and other commonly used programs but manual calculations are given careful attention as well.

ISBN-13: 978-1441911476.

Book Description

This textbook presents the design and analysis of experiments that comprise the aspects of classical theory for continuous response, modern procedures for categorical response, and especially for correlated categorical response. For any design (independent and matched-pair response) the parametric and nonparametric tests depending on the data level are given. Complex designs, such as, for example, cross-over and repeated measures, are included at an introductory and advanced manner. The problem of missing data is also handled with care and procedures in approaching this problem are proposed. Thus, this is an important resource/reference book for undergraduates and university teachers, for statistical researchers in the pharmaceutical industry, or other industries, as well as for clinical research in medicine and dentistry.

The third edition contains a new chapter on incomplete block designs that includes the balanced incomplete block design and partially balanced incomplete block design in addition to the general theory on incomplete block designs. The chapter “Multifactor Experiments” is extended and includes new topics on confounding, partial confounding and fractional replications that are explained with examples. The more theoretical proofs of Chapters 3, 4 and 6 are put into an appendix.

Helge Toutenburg is Professor of Statistics at the University of Munich. He has written nineteen books on linear models, statistical methods in quality engineering, and the analysis of designed experiments. He works on applications of statistics to the fields of medicine and engineering.

Shalabh is Associate Professor of Statistics at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur. He has co-authored a book on linear models and co-edited a book on the recent developments in the area of linear models. He works in the area of linear models, regression analysis and econometrics.

Book Description

There has been substantial growth in the use of data monitoring committees in recent years, by both government agencies and the pharmaceutical industry. This growth has been brought about by increasing recognition of the value of such committees in safeguarding trial participants as well as protecting trial integrity and the validity of conclusions. This very timely book describes the operation of data monitoring committees, and provides an authoritative guide to their establishment, purpose and responsibilities.

Provides a practical overview of data monitoring in clinical trials.

Describes the purpose, responsibilities and operation of data monitoring committees.

Provides directly applicable advice for those managing and conducting clinical trials, and those serving on data monitoring committees.

Gives insight into clinical data monitoring to those sitting on regulatory and ethical committees.

Discusses issues pertinent to those working in clinical trials in both the US and Europe.

The practical guidance provided by this book will be of use to professionals working in and/or managing clinical trials, in academic, government and industry settings, particularly medical statisticians, clinicians, trial co-ordinators, and those working in regulatory affairs and bioethics.

Book Description

The quantitative analysis of biological sequence data is based on methods from statistics coupled with efficient algorithms from computer science. Algebra provides a framework for unifying many of the seemingly disparate techniques used by computational biologists. This book offers an introduction to this mathematical framework and describes tools from computational algebra for designing new algorithms for exact, accurate results. These algorithms can be applied to biological problems such as aligning genomes, finding genes and constructing phylogenies. As the first book in the exciting and dynamic area, it will be welcomed as a text for self-study or for advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate courses.
