Tropical Diseases: From Molecule to Bedside covers a wide range of topics that reflect perspectives of northern and southern hemispheres. Fittingly, it defines tropical diseases in a broader-than-usual manner. The book discusses traditional tropical medicine topics of infectious diseases and nutritional deficiencies. These diseases are common in the tropics, although some are associated more with poverty than with tropical living conditions. It also deals with genetic diseases and genomic issues that are truly associated with living in the tropics, e.g. the thalassemias. The book begins with several papers describing the vast human genetic diversity of Southeast Asia and its relationship to several genetic disorders. These papers illustrate the future direction of genomic activities in relation to disease susceptibility and resistance. The next sections deal with malaria and four specific viral and bacterial diseases of the tropics: hepatitis B and C, tuberculosis, and leprosy, followed by a section on general bacterial infection. Two papers on nutrition complete the volume.

The first, by Hansen,1 is, as far as it goes, a good and accurate account, but it is incomplete in many respects, even in regard to important structures, which we should have thought it impossible to overlook. Moreover, sections were not cut by this author, and without these, it is, in our opinion, impossible to understand the relationship of the parts. The second description is by Giles.2. We feel bound to point out that this account is misleading and inaccurate ; and that the same criticism is equally applicable to his description of Glossina (I. c) METHODS. — For section cutting we find that a combined celloidin- paraffin method gives the best result. In this way it is possible to get intact sections of the chitin, otherwise a difficult matter.

Excerpt: MINUTES OF THE COUNCIL MEETING OF THE AMERICAN SOCIETY OF TROPICAL MEDICINE, ANNUAL MEETING, 1921 The Council met in the Eastman Hotel, Sunday evening, November 13, 9 p. m. The following members of the Council were present: Drs. Swan, Siler and Simon. Drs. Henry J. Nichols and C. C. Bass were present by request. The reports of the Secretary and Treasurer were ordered accepted as read. Under the head of unfinished business, the Treasurer presented the record of an unpaid account amounting to $55.00, which represented the various expenses incidental to the campaign for new members conducted at the request of the Council by Dr. Damasco Rivas. This was ordered paid. The resignations of Drs. Joseph Sailer and C. C. Pierce, as active members were accepted. The following corresponding members also resigned during the year and their resignations were ordered accepted: Drs. A. Gastellani, C. W. Daniels, E. S. Goodhue, W. H. Park. Dr. A. Castellani was elected to honorary membership. The Membership Committee for the ensuing year was requested to canvass the present list of honorary members for the purpose of making corrections and offering possible suggestions at the next annual meeting.
